Darius Dillard and Nate Williams were staying outside when suddenly they saw smoke coming out of the second floor window of a home across the street in Rochester, NY.
The two young boys did not even think twice about it. They quickly took action and ran across the street.
Darius and Nate kicked in the front door and found a family of five running around trying to collect their personal items while smoke was fillinf their home.
“They were trying to get stuff out of the house and we were like, ‘No, you don’t have any time to get anything out of the house, you just need to get out of the house and go because I don’t want none of you to get burnt or nothing,’” Nate said for WROC.
A man called 911 while the young boys rushed into the house full of smoke.
Darius said the downstairs floor of the home was smoky but still visible, but upstairs it was pretty much impossible to see.
“… once it got in your lungs, it was hard, we could have passed out,” he said.
They tried to put out the fire, but the smoke made it very hard for them to breathe and they made sure to take the family of five out of the house.
Firefighters were able to get rid of the fire in a few minutes.
Although fire crews praised Darius and Nate for saving the adult and four children and attempting to put out the fire, they made sure to warn others about doing the same.
“I think it’s awesome that they sprung into motion and tried to make sure there wasn’t anyone inside and got them out, they did something about it,” Jim Ryan, Rochester Fire Department’s deputy chief, said.
The young men have continued to stay humble even after their heroic actions, saying that all they did was make sure everyone got out of the house safely. It didn’t matter to them that they didn’t know the people who lived in the home or anything about them at all, they wanted to ensure their safety.
“I didn’t know them from a can of paint. That’s the crazy thing about it. They just thanked me after. Me and my cousin,”
Darius told Rochesterfirst.com.
These two fine gentlemen, Darius and Nate, ran into a burning home on Emerson St to try and save a family they didn’t know before @RFDPIO1 arrived. Why would they help strangers? Simply because they wouldn’t want it to happen to their family. More on this story on @News_8. pic.twitter.com/OefVsuQrnB

Despite the fact that they don’t see themselves as heroes, I think these two men undoubtedly are!
